In emergency situations, such as a car accident, a knife attack, or sudden cardiac arrest, often only the appropriate response can save health and even lives. Unfortunately, unpreparedness for critical events can lead to panic and confusion, which is why it is important to know the rules of conduct in emergencies. In this article, we present key tips for responding to two dangerous situations – a car accident and a knife attack. Each of us may find ourselves in similar circumstances, so knowledge of how to act can prove invaluable.
A car accident is not only a sudden event but also an extremely stressful one. Many of us do not know how to behave in its face, which causes us to react chaotically, putting ourselves or others at additional risk. The most important rule in the case of a car accident is to remain calm and assess the situation. If you are a witness to an accident, first ensure that the scene is safe – stop at a safe distance, turn on your hazard lights, and if possible, put on a reflective vest.
After securing the scene, proceed to assess the condition of the injured. Check if anyone needs immediate assistance, and then contact emergency services by calling emergency number 112. Provide as many details as possible – describe the location of the incident, the number of injured persons, and their condition. This will allow rescuers to prepare adequately for intervention. If you have first aid knowledge, assess the situation and check if the injured are conscious and breathing. If they are not breathing, you can begin cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). It is important to remember that chest compressions and breaths are performed in a 30:2 ratio, meaning 30 compressions for every 2 breaths.
In a car accident, it is also important not to leave the injured alone. Our presence can calm the injured and give them comfort, especially while they wait for emergency services to arrive. However, if you notice that there is a risk to your safety – for example, a fire threat or fuel leak – move to a safe distance, informing the injured of the need to evacuate if they are able to move.
A knife attack is one of the most dangerous emergency situations that can happen to any of us. In such moments, it is absolutely crucial to avoid direct confrontation and to distance yourself from the threat as quickly as possible. Our priority should be to find safe shelter or to escape as quickly as possible. Avoiding the attacker and maintaining a safe distance is a principle that can save lives.
Upon noticing a person with a knife, try to act calmly and warn others around you. If you have the opportunity to escape, try to move thoughtfully and avoid panic – noise and sudden movements can attract the attacker's attention. If you cannot distance yourself, look for a place that provides protection or cover, such as a door, pillar, railing, or other obstacles.
It is also important to immediately notify emergency services. Calling the emergency number 112 will allow for the quickest reporting of the threat. Provide details regarding the location and description of the attacker so that authorities can respond effectively. Remember not to take actions that may put you at additional risk – saving others should only occur when it does not endanger your health or life.
If the attack occurs in an enclosed space, such as a building, try to find an emergency exit or lock yourself in a room that will provide protection until help arrives. If you cannot escape, barricade yourself with anything that can serve as a barrier against the attacker. Ultimately, knowledge and mental preparation for such events can significantly impact our safety.
Regardless of the type of emergency situation, it is worthwhile to continually expand your knowledge of first aid and safety rules. The KARAMBIT Foundation regularly organizes training sessions that can help understand how to behave in various threatening situations, how to act in the event of sudden cardiac arrest, choking, or burns. Remember that even a short training can provide us with tools that will help not only ourselves but also others.
Emergency situations require a quick, decisive response and maintaining a cool head. Even basic knowledge of first aid or principles of reacting in critical moments can prove invaluable. Mental preparation, awareness of how emergency services operate, and understanding the principles of avoiding hazards are the foundation of safety – for ourselves and our loved ones.
As the KARAMBIT Foundation, we encourage participation in the training sessions and workshops we organize. Let’s ensure that we do not feel helpless in the face of danger and equip ourselves with skills that may be crucial in dangerous moments.
